The Archaeological Museum

A traditional mansion near the harbour in Mitilini is the Archaeological museum, which introduces the visitor to the history of the island of Lesvos through the centuries. One can see, in its two halls, typical examples of prehistoric ceramics and clay idols from the Early Helladic settlement of Thermi. Geometric and Archaic pottery from classical and Hellenistic times come from various regions of the island. There are also, gold coins from the area of Messoi and terracottas from ancient Pyrra. ?
In the courtyard are Aeolian columns from the temple of Apollo at Klopedi (sixth century B.C.), votive alters, a headless female statue from the Roman period, the marble throne of the orator Potamon, a reconstructed fountain from the Turkish occupation and other artifacts. This Old Archaeological Museum is on Agryri Eftalioti Street.
A New Archaeological Museum with lavish exhibits that stretch from the Archaic to the Roman period is on 8th of November Street between the harbour and the castle (the area of Kioski). Among the exhibits there are mosaics, such as the known ones from the ???Residence of Menandros??, frescoes, sculptures, votive and tomb statues etc.?
