Stratis Eleftheriades Teriad

Stratis Eleftheriades Teriad was born in Mitilini in 1897 and died in Paris in 1983. When he was 18, he left from Lesvos and went to Paris, where he studied law, without stopping thinking of painting. His interest was mainly focused on its thorough study, so he became an art critic. He cooperated with established publishers for the publication of periodicals, books and newspapers about visual arts. In 1972, in Vareia, next to the Theophilos Museum, he erected at his own expense, a building which houses his publications. The Museum of Modern Arts serves as an Open Book, in which visitors are introduced to proofs, original works and critiques of many pioneers of the modern art, including Picasso, Chagall, Matisse, and others. One of Teriad’s most significant contibutions was the recognition that he offered to the -until then- neglected work of Theophilos. It is solely due to Teriad’s vision that today Theophilos’ unique spirit is preserved
