Fauna of Lesvos

More than 130 bird species have been recorded at the Gulf of Kalloni, which is one of the unique wetlands for birds in Greece. Some of the birds remain there and others migrate. Biologists, ornithologists and birdwatchers believe that this region is a live museum of natural history, where they can explore and study the existent bird species, their various biological and ecological conditions and behavioral issues. The best period to observe and research is spring, when the number of birds that come from foreign countries is increased. Besides, the salterns of the region constitute special habitat for the development of various animal and plant organisms, which constitute the birds??? food. Every year, this wetland is overwhelmed by various species of wild gooses, wild ducks, wild swans, herons, kingfisher, avocets, glossy ibises, seagulls, terns, pelicans, grebes, moorhens and cormorants. However, the pink flamingo is the bird of the wetland of the Gulf that is distinguished for its beauty and colours. ?

In Lesvos live, also, amphibians, serpents, birds and chiefly mammals. The squirrel of Lesvos is among the prettiest small mammals of the island, and exists only in Lesvos. Special interest presents the mountain partridge ???choukar?? and the black stork.
