Zagreb Film Festival will be taking place 13th time in a row and last for incredible nine days. From Saturday 14th of November until Sunday 22nd of November visitors can expect a diverse line-up of films in legendary Zagreb cinemas of Tuškanac and Europa.
Film festivals are Croatia’s absolute forte, and among many international film festivals held in the country, Zagreb Film Festival is surely among the best.
What puts Zagreb Film Festival in the range with other prestigious world and European film festivals is its focus on presenting and promoting debut films and emerging filmmaking talents. The best ones are awarded a Golden Pram.
This year’s central programme will focus on fiction films, with documentary films only in side sections. One of central programme’s sections will be Checkers, a category dedicated to recent Croatian short film, which this year celebrates its 10th birthday.
The feature fiction competition program this year includes the record-breaking 14 titles from all over the world, from Scandinavia to the Pacific islands of Vanuatu. It even includes the Venezueal entry From Afar directed by Lorenzo Vigas which won a prestigious Golden Lion on Venice film festival.
In addition to the main line-up, Zagreb Film Festival features other well known off-sections. My First Film, to the selection of film critic Nenad Polimac, presents debut titles by acclaimed Bosnian and Herzegovinian filmmakers, and The Great 5 traditionally features cherry-picked new works from largest European cinemas.
The off-programme includes several catchy novelties: Making of – a section giving film enthusiasts a first-hand insight into another interesting filmmaking dimension, and a line-up of Eastern European horrors featuring rarely seen films in the wake of ZFF’s art-house genre programmes (such as Eastern European westerns and SFs).
Film aficionados will undoubtedly be particularly thrilled at the news that Zagreb Film Festival is organising an Orson Welles film retrospective, celebrating the 100th birth and 30th death anniversary of this legendary director, whose oeuvre is largely related to Croatia.
So if you are a film enthusiast, Zagreb is just the best place to be this November!
