Lesvos Olive Oil #3
In the decades that follow, even though still occupied by the Turkish people, Lesvos enjoys a great economic prosperity mainly originating from the commercial exploitation of the soap and olive oil. New steam engines facilitate the olive oil production. New factories work on the processing of olive sub – products – as kernel and soap – that are in great demand all around the world. The port of Mytilene becomes a great transport centre from which tones of oil and soap are transferred to Marseilles, England, Constantinople (Istanbul), Tergesti, Alexandria. The economic development results in a general prosperity. Expensive neoclassic residencies still existing all around the villages of the island – Agia Paraskevi, Plomari, Polichnitos and Mytilene – manifest precisely the great wealth and prosperity of the inhabitants of the time
