Flora of Lesvos
Lesvos maintains a rich and interesting flora. Until today, there have been identified more than 1400 of self-sawn species and subspecies of ???superior plants??. Some of these species are indigenous and some very rare in Greece and in worldwide level. The yellow rhododendron, which grows in west Lesvos, the lily of the sea, the iris, the haplophyllum, the alyssum and many types of orchids, are some of the rare trees and plants of the island. It is a fact that Theophrastos (372-287 B.C.) who is the father of botanic science was born here in Lesvos. The east, south and central parts of the island are verdant by olive groves, forests of pinus brutia, oak-tree, fir-tree, plane, beech and chestnut.
