The end of August is traditionally reserved for Croatia’s largest street festival, Špancirfest. Held in the historic city of Varaždin, the festival has become a must see event.
In the ten days between 21th and 30th of August the pedestrian zone of the city’s baroque center will transform into a stage for hundreds of acts and artists, from street performers, theater groups and visual artists to some of the biggest names in music.
To ”Špancir” is to stroll. During the festival people of Varaždin and their guest’s take to the streets and explore the nook’s and crannies of the beautiful city center. Every corner and hidden ally offers something for the eyes, ears or the palate. Varaždin, colloquially called ”Croatia’s little Wiena” due to its baroque architecture and rich cultural heritage, is impressive in and of itself, but truly comes to life during the festival.
In the evenings, rivers of people head to the wall’s of the fortress ”Stari grad” for performances from domestic, regional and global bands and musicians. This years lineup includes Mando Diao, Parov Stellar Band, Gogol Bordello and Nouvelle Vague.
A new addition to the festival is the stage ”Vila Bedeković” which will cater to the tastes of those who enjoy classical music and jazz. The stage will host some of the top Croatian artists from the genres like Josipa Lisac, Maksim Mrvica, Matija Dedić and Amira Medunjanin.
