The Monastery of Leimon
Leimonos Monastery built in 1526 is a large cluster of buildings between Kalloni and Filia and is the largest in size monastery of Lesvos. Its katholicon, three-aisled basilica with elevated the central aisle and double narthex, was constructed in 1526 and received its contemporary form in 1795. Its interior is decorated with remarkable frescoes, that are dated the second half of the 16th and the first half of the 17th century. Today, it is an important spiritual, social and philanthropic centre on the island with a museum, a library and social services. A series of magnificent heirloom treasures, such as Byzantine and post-Byzantine manuscripts and icons, prints, holy vestments, liturgical utensils, holy relics and folkloric exhibits, entitles it among the richest monasteries of the Aegean space. Its library hosts about 5000 books and 300 of them belong to 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th century. Overnight stays are possible. There is, also, a festival here, celebrating Saint Ignatios on the second weekend of October
