Municipality of Polihnitos
Polihnitos is the capital of the homonymous municipality, which comprises of the villages: Vassilika, Vrisa, Lisvori, Nyfida, Vatera, Ano Stauros and Kato Stauros. In the region of the municipality there are important archaeological sites. The oldest settlement of the island has been discovered at the location of Halkies, on the southwest of Polihnitos, dated from the beginning of the copper age. The ancient temple of ???Dionysos of Vrissagenis is located at the cape of Agios Fokas. At the location Kourtir in Lisvori has been discovered one of the oldest settlements of the copper age and the sunken ancient city of Pyrra has been discovered at the east side of the gulf of Kalloni. A prehistoric settlement and the ruins of a Byzantine fortification have also been found in the village of Skamnoudi. Worth visiting is the Cathedral church of Agios Georgios in Polihnitos, with the beautiful stone-carved bell-tower. The visitor should also visit the Folklore Museum, the Monastery of Dramandriou built in the 12th century and the basilica of Zoodohos Pigi, an important Byzantine monument in Vrissa and the church of Agios Konstantinos in the same village. In August the village of Polihnitos celebrates the ???Fournelli, festival with the traditional ???casting of the nets and music. Vatera is the village with a famous beach which is 8 km long.
